FiscalNote, a government issue tracking platform contracted me to lead the new reporting experience for their customers. Their clients create reports to share with internal and external stakeholders outlining the status of the policies and issues they are tracking as well as team actions. The project changed hands many times and was stalling to get off the ground, which is why it was given to me given my speed and years of experience leading projects. The goals were not well defined, so I engaged the research team to see if they had current research regarding the client's experience with reporting and what their pain points were. I also interviewed members of the customer service to learn what questions clients frequently asked about reporting. Once I had enough information to go on, I worked closely with another designer, the development team and product managers to align on the vision and objectives for reporting improvements. This included a reporting set up flow, a report builder as well as the various report types that could be exported as a pdf or a sharable link. I presented a requirements document to the team pitching the long term vision as well as the vision for MVP since it needed to get shipped quickly. I collaborated closely with the lead engineer to negotiate what types of functionality would be feasible to build and execute within the timeframe. I created user flows and determined where current design patterns could be leveraged as well as identifying and designing new ones. I also determined what data would be most useful in the reports as well as what level of customization would be appropriate balancing tech limitations, user needs and timing. I worked very closely with the dev team in sprints to be available for questions and help reduce tech load when possible. I also collaborated with the manager of data viz to create a new design system for data visualization for reporting. After the designs and project was complete, I did another round of interviews with the customer service team and account managers for feedback. I also shared it with a few clients as well. I mainly heard how impressed they were with the improved experience and visual design. I even received accolades from senior leadership. There is so much more I can share about this project as it was extremely complex!
